Wet Compression Boosts Power Output by 28 MW
Gas Turbine Wet CompressionIn 2021, MeeFog wet compression systems were installed on two GE 7F.03 gas turbines equipped with PSM’s FlameSheet combustion technology in the southwestern U.S. By 2024, the user stated systems consistently exceeded expectations, delivering up to a 14 MW power boost per GT with a fog system flow rate of only 35 gpm. The fog systems have operated reliably for four summer seasons without any compressor blade erosion or other turbine issues.
Wet compression consists of spraying water into the gas turbine compressor. The water evaporates inside giving an inter-cooling effect which reduces the work of compression, causing an increase in power output. A small increase in the inlet air mass flow – due to the water injected – and an increase in fuel flow adds to the power boost.
